It’s hard to turn on the news or go online without seeing a story about the latest beating, shooting, or bombing. It’s disgusting. Is America really that fucked up? Are people becoming more violent or is the media just starting to tell us about it more? It’s true that the media does sometimes “celebritize” killers which makes others act on their impulses because they want the fame. So do we stop telling the world what’s happening? Is there a happy medium?
I don’t have the answer for that, but the violence has gotten to the point where we have to be afraid to do anything and we analyze every person who is seemingly off, just in case. I was on the train the other day and a man got up, walked up the train car, and then walked back to his seat. I immediately thought, is he trying to scope out the train? See how many people there are? What is he gonna do? Nothing happened but I thought about this until I was out onto the platform. And you know what? That sucks. I’m 19 years old, I don’t want to be nervous to live my life.
Today I saw that there were reports of bombs on Harvard’s campus. When you’re a college student, you want to feel safe on campus. It’s essentially your home away from home for four years so it should feel like home.
We should not have to be afraid that something is going to happen every time we walk out the door. Or even if we don’t walk out the door, for that matter.
What are we supposed to do? Nobody should have to be scared to live in fear that they might die.
